Digital Product Passport (DPP)

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a regulatory instrument established by the European Union to operationalize transparency and traceability across product value chains. It is a central component of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), formally adopted under the framework of the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan. The DPP introduces a harmonized digital system for collecting, storing, and sharing verified product data throughout all stages of a product’s life cycle — from design and manufacturing to use, reuse, and end-of-life management.

In accordance with Article 8 of the ESPR proposal, the DPP is designed to provide standardized, machine-readable information on key sustainability parameters, such as material composition, recyclability, carbon footprint, energy efficiency, reparability, and presence of substances of concern. This information will be made accessible through a unique product identifier and hosted in interoperable data systems, ensuring that manufacturers, market surveillance authorities, and other authorized actors can exchange information efficiently and consistently across the European market.

The implementation of the DPP will occur progressively, beginning with selected priority product groups identified by the European Commission (including batteries, textiles, and electronics) before extending to additional sectors.
